The older I get, the more time I want to spend with my family every possible second! A few weekends ago, I had an idea to take my mom and sister to One Paseo (this really cool and trendy shopping center in Del Mar, San Diego) so we could celebrate our birthdays. Sorry Dad and Akshay, this was going to be a girls day! The thing I love about One Paseo is that their retail space is a diverse portfolio of big name businesses as well as small mom and pop shops. I think it makes the experience more fulfilling because people can decide if they want to try something new or go with something more familiar. We ended up visiting 3 spots: Parakeet Cafe, Pigment, and Salt & Straw. Here is a little guide on how to have a great mom and daughter(s) day at One Paseo!
Stop 1- Parakeet Cafe:
We started our day out at Parakeet Cafe, where we enjoyed a delicious brunch and fresh coffee/tea. I ordered an organic greens and scrambled eggs combo while my mom and sister split a quinoa mezze bowl with chicken. I really enjoyed my meal, mainly because I love eggs, but also the wheat sour dough toast with the labneh spread was really good. The spread reminded me of tzatziki sauce but with more flavor. My mom and sister enjoyed their meal as well and couldn’t stop raving about the muhammara (similar to hummus)! It’s also super healthy, which is an added plus. I insisted we order an overnight oats chia pudding to share. It’s so darn good that I wished we had each ordered one on our own! Compared to the La Jolla location, this space is a lot bigger and also has a large, gorgeous patio. We decided to sit outside and enjoy the warm rays since it was a nice day. Keep in mind it gets pretty crowded around 11AM; however, it clears up fast, so if you’re ok with a later brunch, I recommend waiting a bit. Plus, you’ll get the opportunity to take a cute photo in front of the colorful parakeet wall (featured image)! Also, I need to call out Haley, one of the awesome baristas at Parakeet Cafe! He took really good care of us, making sure I got all the right angles and shots for my pictures.
Stop 2- Pigment
Ladies – Pigment is a pink, boho dream! (Akshay’s note: I still don’t know what boho means. Unless it’s short for Bohemian Rhapsody. Killer song.) If you’re looking for a spot for planters or accent pieces, then this is a must visit for you! They’re known for household decor, but they also sell dresses and cute little accessories too. You could spend an hour just exploring and making a wish list of all the things to buy! I knew my mom would enjoy this place because she loves plants. Also, Pigment has a workstation where Kristen, the plant whisperer (she was amazing!), will help you choose succulents, soils, and colored sands to add to your pots. I brought a couple of my own pots from home in addition to selecting two small planters from their fine collection. We spent about forty-five minutes crafting our little plants into something beautiful. I had no idea there was so much that goes into making sure the succulents stay strong and healthy!
Stop 3- Salt & Straw
I think this was my sister’s favorite part. This girl could survive on ice-cream for the rest of her life. (Akshay’s note: Yeah, welcome to the benefits of being 22 years old.) We had the opportunity to try a flight of ice cream with a few of their seasonal flavors, which included the Campfire S’mores and Mushroom Muddy Buddies. But don’t worry, they release a new selection of flavors every month! I was scrolling through their July menu and the Berries, Berries, Berries and Birthday Cake & Blackberries sound so delicious! I have to say its a really creative concept and keeps us all curious as to what new flavors they are going to come up with. Also, if your taste buds are simple (like mine), then you should try one of their originals, the Lavender Honey. It’s so refreshing!
All in all, it was a successful mother/daughters day and another great memory for the books. Thank you One Paseo, Parakeet Cafe, Pigment, and Salt & Straw for such a wonderful experience. We truly had an amazing time and cannot wait to come back!
