A couple Saturdays ago, Akshay and I were invited to join our friends for a fun night in Laguna Beach to enjoy some rum and food at Eva’s Caribbean Kitchen. Little did we know that we (meaning the ladies) were going to turn our “classy” night into a drunk-fest, cuddly, “I don’t get hangovers because I’m in my early 20’s” kind of night.
Our reservation for Eva’s Caribbean Kitchen was at 6pm, so we called an Uber, mainly because we are responsible adults and had no intention of driving, since we assumed we’d be having a drink or 4 ;).
When we arrived, we (Angela, Natalie, and myself) were enamored by the ambiance and décor of the restaurant. It was cozy with its soft yellow themes and colorful stringy lights. We asked to be seated outside because California doesn’t have actual seasons, which means October is basically summer. Our server, Krista (I think that was her name), greeted us and asked what drinks we would like to order. And so our night began:
- Originally, we wanted to do the rum tasting, but the $25-50 tastings of 3 types of rum shots didn’t seem appealing from a “let’s get the best bang for our buck” perspective. We stuck to rum based cocktails, which were about $10 each. I had the their Knock Out Rum Punch, a mojito (yes, with rum!), and the Brown Suga. Overall, the cocktails were good!
- For dinner, I ordered the West Indian Curried Snapper and Akshay ordered the Cornmeal Louisiana Catfish. When the food arrived, they accidentally switched mine and Natalie’s dinners, and so I had a couple bites of her Creole Stewed Fish. While I enjoyed my curried snapper, next time I will order the Creole Stewed Fish. Both had a lot of flavor! Unfortunately, I don’t think Akshay was as impressed with his meal. (Akshay’s note: I wasn’t. Mediocre, not a ton of flavor)
- After dinner, Eva came out and introduced herself to us. She’s super personable and loves talking about her culture and food. When we told her it was our first time at her restaurant, she brought us 2 desserts/ rum pairings on the house! The chocolate/rum pairing and the coconut crème brulèe were delicious. Next time I want to try their chocolate bread pudding though.
Overall Experience at Eva’s Caribbean Kitchen:
Our server, Krista, definitely helped with making our experience great. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and very honest! For 3 drinks and dinner, it was about $70ish dollars per person. I am all about making memories with great friends while eating yummy food! Natalie, Angela, and myself had a great hangover the next day, but it was worth it (Mixing alcohol is the lesson that never gets learned)! (Akshay’s note: hangovers? Hah. Amateurs.)
